It’s Pizza Monday in our house and tonight I’m going to share with you a stupid simple recipe for homemade pizza crust.
Trust me when I tell you that once you try it, you’ll be hooked! And when I say it’s stupid simple, I am not kidding.
Recipe courtesy of the Engine 2 Rescue Diet Cookbook.
- 3 cups flour (I use Bob’s Red Mill Whole Wheat), plus more for dusting your surface
- 1 packet active yeast
- 1 1/4 cups warm water
- 1/2 c applesauce
Place flour in a large mixing bowl.
Add yeast to warm water and stir and add to flour, add applesauce.
Using a large spoon, combine ingredients until you can get your hands in there. Start pulling the flour from the sides and incorporate it into the mixture
If the dough is sticky, add more flour a TB at a time until it forms a ball.
Sprinkle flour on your counters or a cutting board. Knead it for a few minutes and make your dough into a ball.
Pop the ball of dough into a large bowl and place damp paper towels or a dishtowel over the dough. Cover with plastic wrap and lay a towel on top. Set it in a warm spot.
In an hour, unwrap the dough and punch it down a few times then roll it back into a ball, cover and set aside. I usually punch it down 1 or 2 more times before using it.
Divide it up into 4 balls and you’ll have 4 delicious pizza crusts to top however you like.
My favorite topping is a walnut-basil-spinach oil free pesto, a pile of veggies and then topped (salad-style) with arugula tossed with balsamic vinegar.
Now go run!
