Earlier this week I hit 10K steps by 9:07am. I went for a 3-mile run, taught my online Zoom fitness class then got ready and headed out to work.
When I cozied up to go to bed I noted that I’d hit over 17K steps.
Now you might think, ‘great job, Keli’ That’s a lot of steps’. And yes, I’ll take the win for that, but the thing that struck me was that in 12 1/2 hours, I only logged 7,800 steps. 12 1/2 hours. That’s a lot of non-movement.
And you know what, I felt all of that inactivity. I had meetings, I was holed up in my office working on an event and I sat. And I was stiff and tired at the end of my long day.
So here are 3 reminders to help us all get off our keisters and get moving!
- Every 60-90 minutes get up from what you’re doing and take a 2-3 minute walk break.
- If you don’t already make a point of taking the stairs instead of the escalator or elevator, start now.
- Stop circling the parking lot looking for a good spot. Park as far away as you can. PSA – If you’re shopping at night, don’t do this.
And let’s reframe having to “get” a certain number of steps or “having” to move more. Embrace the opportunity, it makes it less of a chore that way.
Now go run!
