Cross Country Musings

I’m writing this on a plan as I head back home from Kansas City, MO where I’ve spent the past 5 days in a nursing home visiting my mom.   

In the time I spent there, walking the halls,  sitting with my mom and the ladies who share her dining table, and seeing the folks who were in their wheelchairs or having their therapies I came away with one takeaway.  Well two, actually.

  1. The aging process is not kind.
  2. I am more resolute than ever in my mission to promote healthy habits.

Heart disease, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.  are no joke.   But we hold they key.  I know I can’t promise that living a healthy lifestyle will gurantee a long life (I mean we could get hit by a bus). But eating right and exercising can go a long, long, looooong way towards preventing a lot of shit.

Are we willing to do what it takes?  Exercise at least 30 ( but hopefully closer to 45 or 60) minutes a day.  Eat fresh fruits and veggies,  whole grains, lean protein, healthy fats and cut out sugary drinks and too much processed food?   You’re right, it’s not easy.  It’s not a quick fix, it’s not a pill to pop.  It takes work.

But hell, we’re worth it.

    I hope you had a very nice visit with your mom…I’m sure it was bitter sweet. Glad you got to spend time with her and hope she’s in good spirits. Glad you’re coming home…I hope your flight is not affected by this storm…and that it passes in time for BC tomorrow.

    I’ve been doing the half hour exercise classes at Smith Ranch Homes…the old people there are so lucky to have that! I’m glad my mom is committed. It’s not BC, but it’s full body and I’m sure helps a lot. Tai Chi, chair yoga, etc.

    I feel a bit out of shape and now that I’m not working, it’s not easy getting up at 5am, but heck, I can take naps so I’m super lucky! So glad you’re in my life…thank you Keli!

      Hi Karin! Thank you, the visit was bittersweet, that’s probably the best way to describe it. I’m glad that you have been staying active while I was away, I am sure you were a breath of fresh air for the folks at your mom’s exercise class! See you tomorrow morning! Keli 🙂
